Frequently Asked Questions

When is the due date for the 2290 form?

2290 Forms must be submitted to the IRS every year by August 31st. The annual tax year runs from July 1st to June 30th every year. All tax documents must be submitted by the last day of the second month of the tax year, which is August 31st.

If you recently acquired a heavy vehicle and must submit your 2290 Tax Form for the first time, then you must submit your documents no later than the last day of the next month after the heavy vehicle is first used. This means that if you first use your vehicle on March 2nd, then you must submit your 2290 tax form by April 30th. Even if you first use your heavy vehicle on the last day of March on the 30th or 31st, your forms are still due on April 30th.

What is a Form 2290?

The 2290 Tax Form is used to file necessary taxes with the IRS for heavy vehicles. This is for any vehicle that is 55,000lbs or more and has driven over 5,000 miles per year. It is commonly known as the HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax) and goes by many different names, including: heavy highway tax, truck tax, Highway Use Tax Return, and more. They all mean the same thing, which is the 2290 IRS Schedule 1 tax form.

This form needs to be submitted annually to the IRS and paid in full before any heavy vehicle can be allowed to travel. They use this form to calculate and accept taxes for heavy vehicles. It is also used to determine the type of heavy vehicle that is on the road. This can range from standard big rigs to logging vehicles and off highway construction vehicles. It is important for the government to monitor heavy vehicles to help identify trends in industries. These taxes help pay for road improvements and offset environmental impacts.

The 2290 Tax Form is often accompanied with a 2290-V form. This form is a payment voucher that is sent in with a check or money order to help expediate payments. If you’re e-filing, we will take care of all supplementary documentation that may be required, such as the 2290-V form.

How do I file a Form 2290?

You can file your forms one of two ways. You can mail it in, wait by the mailbox for approval, and hope it was sent in on time and all the information was correctly filled in. Or you can file online through any IRS-authorized e-filing provider, like us! You can reach us online or by phone to talk to a real person to help with updating your 2290 Schedule 1 Tax Form with accuracy and ease.

Things You Will Need
The first thing you will need is to request a 2290 Tax Form. To properly fill out the form, you will need to get information from your heavy vehicle. This includes the VIN, mileage, and the category that your heavy vehicle falls under.

If you e-file instead of submitting your forms through the mail, you can find all this information in one place. We have tax professionals to help guide you through the process and submit any additional paperwork that you might need. Find an IRS authorized e-filer, like us, and log-in to your account. Then fill out our smart forms and get your stamped Form 2290 Schedule 1 Tax Form in no time at all.

Who has to submit a 2290 Form?

Anyone who owns a heavy vehicle that weighs over 55,000 lbs must submit a 2290 tax form. If the truck is in your name, then you must submit your 2290 Tax Form every year. This can be an individual who personally owns a heavy vehicle or a company that owns a fleet. Sometimes, companies will loan a heavy vehicle to a driver to drive for their company. The heavy vehicle will be registered under the company’s name, and therefore, the company is responsible for submitting all tax forms. If you’re not sure who the registered owner is, you can always use the VIN number to look up the DMV records to see who the registered owner is.

How do I get a copy of my paid 2290?

Depending on the method you used to submit your forms, there are multiple ways to get your copy. If you mailed in your forms, you would have to submit a written request either through fax or mail to your government agency and await their reply. Your request will only be granted if you have already successfully submitted your 2290 Tax Form and paid in full. You will also need to include a copy of the previously filed form that you are requesting and a signed cover sheet with your name, phone number, fax number, and the date your 2290 Tax Form was previously filed. This can take several weeks to complete.

If you file electronically through our website, your information will be stored in our secure and confidential system that you can access at any time by logging into your account. This will help expedite the process of filing for next year. Once your claim is approved, we will send you an email and you will be able to download your stamped 2290 Tax Form directly from your account. If you plan on printing your 2290 Tax Form, make sure your printer has enough ink and that the watermark is clear and legible after printing. That way, your state’s department of motor vehicles can clearly read it.

How can I file a 2290 online?

Only an authorized agency can handle online form submissions, like us! The process of e-filing is fast and easy. We provide all the forms and help walk you through everything in 3 easy steps.

1)Provide your business information.
2) Submit details of your heavy vehicle(s).
3) Pay and receive your copy.

After that, you’re all set and ready to get back on the road.

How much is the 2290 tax?

The 2290 Heavy Vehicle Tax ranges depending on factors such as vehicle weight, time on the road, number of vehicles in the fleet, and more. It is possible for your vehicle to not owe any taxes, and it’s possible to have to pay more than $550 per vehicle. Even if you don’t owe any money, you are always required to fill out the 2290 Tax Form and submit it to your governing agency. Our job is to find out exactly how much you owe so you don’t overpay.

For most vehicles, prices begin at $100 if your heavy vehicle weighs 55,000 pounds, with an additional $22 owed for every thousand pounds over the initial 55,000 pound threshold. Depending on your category, you may be entitled to a discount. Logging vehicles, for instance, are offered a 25% discount, and suspended vehicles pay even less. It is important to know what category your vehicle falls under so you can take advantage of any discounts that you may be eligible for.

Even if your vehicle is no longer in use, you still need to file a 2290 Tax Form. However, you may be eligible for a credit to use on your vehicle that is still being used. If your heavy vehicle was stolen, destroyed, or sold, you could be entitled to a tax credit.

What category is my heavy vehicle?

Categories your heavy vehicle might fall under include:

Suspended Vehicle - heavy vehicles that have not yet reached 5,000 miles per year or 7,500 miles per year for agricultural vehicles.
Exempted Vehicle - government vehicles, off highway vehicles that are used for non-transport functions, and other non-transport vehicles or semi-trailers.
Credited Vehicle - any vehicles that were stolen, sold, or destroyed before the tax year was completed. You can obtain a pro-rated credit for any month that your vehicle was out of commission. You will also need to fill out an 8849 Schedule 6 Tax Form if you wish to request a credit, and there is no deadline to submit this form.

What if I am late to file my Form 2290?

If you’re late filing your 2290 Tax Form, there are a few things you will need to do in order to get everything back on track. The first and most important thing to note is that there will be late fees. You will be charged a 4.5% fee of the total taxes that are due and an additional 5% late processing fee. These additional fees add up if you have more than one heavy vehicle you are reporting. Unfortunately, the late fees are not just flat fees. These fees will be increased every additional month that your tax forms are not submitted, with additional interest charged. The sooner you can submit your tax documents, the better.

It’s best to avoid late fees all together by filing with an e-filer like us. If you file with us, we will make sure to contact you before your next annual taxes are due. We give you plenty of time to get everything in order and report any updates to your account. With everything already in one secure and safe location, there is no wasted time looking for past returns or documents. We help take care of everything, so you avoid late fees and save money.

Do you have to file Form 2290 every year?

Yes, the 2290 form needs to be paid and submitted every year for any vehicle that is over 55,000 lbs and drives more than 5,000 miles per year. Even if your vehicle is only used off-road or you sell heavy vehicles and don’t even drive them, you will still need to submit a 2290 Tax Form. It doesn’t matter if you owe taxes or not on the heavy vehicle, a 2290 Schedule 1 Tax Form is required every year that heavy vehicle remains in your possession.

The only time you don’t have to submit a 2290 Tax Form is after you have already submitted a 2290 Tax Form marked appropriately to inform the governing agency that this vehicle is no longer in your possession. Reasons for this may include that the heavy vehicle was stolen or destroyed.

The tax year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th. If you recently acquired your vehicle, you will need to submit your 2290 Tax Form immediately. The deadline is the last day of the next month that the heavy vehicle is first used. That means if it is used in April, you have until the last day of May to submit your 2290. After that, you will submit your forms at the same time every year.

What Do I need to start e-filing?

Submitting your form 2290 taxes is simple and convenient when you submit them online through us. All you need to begin is three numbers. 1) Your EIN 2) Your Vin 3) Your Taxable Gross Weight

1) You need to apply for an EIN if you do not have one already. The IRS will not accept a social security number, but as long as you have a social security number and are a citizen of the United States, you can apply for an EIN.

2) Your VIN can be found on your vehicle registration or on the vehicle itself. Make sure you have written your VIN down exactly how it appears on your registration. If you accidentally send in the wrong VIN, you will have to send in a new form 2290 with an amendment to resolve any issues.

3) Your taxable gross weight is the sum of the actual weight of the vehicle, the weight of any trailers, and the weight of the maximum load that is expected to be carried on the vehicle.

Can you transfer your Form 2290 to a new vehicle?

The short answer is "no." You cannot transfer your 2290 Schedule 1 Tax form from one truck to another. The long answer is that you can use your old heavy vehicle as a credit to help pay the taxes on your new heavy vehicle.

Because most heavy vehicles vary in weight and description, you will need to file your second heavy vehicle with a new 2290 Tax Form. If the new vehicle is a different size and weight, you may have to pay a different amount for your new heavy vehicle than you have been paying for your old one. You can then request a pro-rated credit for any months that have already been paid in the tax year. This credit will carry over to your new vehicle to help alleviate the expense of your new heavy vehicle tax. For instance, if your old heavy vehicle was destroyed and you got an identical heavy vehicle of the same weight and category, that credit will cover the taxes for the remainder of the year.

You are required to submit a 2290 by the last day of the following month when the new vehicle is first used. It is important to start the credit approval process before that to avoid any late fees.

What does Schedule 1 mean?

Schedule 1 is proof that you paid for your 2290 form. It is issued with a watermark and serves as your receipt after the IRS accepts your 2290 Tax Form. You need to have a Schedule 1 to submit to your local department of motor vehicles when registering your heavy vehicle. This document shows your EIN, business name, address, and VIN.

Is Form 8849 part of Form 2290?

Form 8849 is used when you are requesting a refund of excess paid taxes. When you overpay your taxes, you are eligible for a refund if you can prove that you overpaid. The most common reason for overpaying is if your heavy vehicle’s taxable gross weight has changed. The only time this form is used with a Form 2290 is when you are requesting a credit refund.

Do I need an EIN to fill out my 2290 Form?

Yes. The IRS requires all 2290 Tax Forms to be filed under an EIN rather than a social security number. If you try to use a social security number, the IRS will reject your 2290 Tax Form and you will have to resubmit it to be issued a 2290 Schedule 1 Tax Form.

An EIN is a unique nine-digit number that is used to identify a business or entity for tax purposes. It stands for Employer Identification Number and has also been called an FEIN, or Federal Employer Identification Number. If you do not currently have an EIN, they are very easy to get. Any American citizen with a social security number can apply.

What is Taxable Gross Weight?

The taxable gross weight is the maximum weight of a truck. This includes the actual weight of the vehicle, the weight of any trailers, and the weight of the maximum load that is expected to be carried on the vehicle. The gross weight is calculated by adding the sum of these numbers.

When determining the weight of the vehicle and trailers, you must determine the "unloaded weight". This is the weight of the vehicle when ready for service. That means the weight must include the fuel that will be used and any objects that will be stored in the vehicle in daily use. The driver’s weight and any helpers are not included in this measurement.

An easy calculation can be made by using this helpful chart.

ADD      -      ACTUAL UNLOADED WEIGHT OF A FULLY EQUIPPED VEHICLE

Plus      -      Actual unloaded weight of any trailers and equipment that is used in combination with the vehicle

Plus      -      The weight of the maximum load that is expected to be carried on the vehicle and the trailers or semi trailers

Equals      -      Taxable Gross Weight

What is a logging vehicle?

Logging vehicles are defined as vehicles that carry harvested materials from forested sites. This can include timber that has been sawed, chipped, or other milling processes, or raw timber harvested directly from the forest. It is important to know if your heavy vehicle is a logging vehicle because logging vehicles are eligible for discounted tax rates.

What is a Suspended vehicle?

A suspended vehicle is any heavy vehicle that travels less than 5,000 miles in a tax year. If your vehicle is classified as a suspended vehicle, you do not have to pay annual taxes on this vehicle, but you do have to submit Form 2290. When submitting your 2290 Tax Form for a suspended vehicle, it is important to mark all the appropriate boxes and include an accurate mileage count. If a heavy vehicle that was previously listed as a suspended vehicle exceeds 5,000 miles annually, an amended 2290 must be submitted and any necessary taxes must be paid at that time.

If I buy another vehicle, can I e-file my original Form 2290 and just add my new vehicle?

No. If you have already submitted your Form 2290 for your previously owned vehicles, you will then submit a new Form 2290 that lists only your new vehicle. This is because your Form 2290 is due annually at the beginning of the new tax year. Since your previous vehicles have already been registered, you will receive a "duplicate filing error" if you resubmit your vehicles. This will cause your whole application to be rejected.

When you obtain a new heavy vehicle, you must submit your new Form 2290 by the last day of the next month in which the heavy vehicle is first used. You will pay a pro-rated tax for the year and then the following tax year when you submit your Form 2290. You will then add all your vehicles now that they are all synched on the same timetable.

Why did I receive an online duplicate filing error?

This error is generated when the system detects that you have already filed under the same EIN, for the same tax period, with the same VIN number. If you believe this message was sent in error, double check all the information that was input, especially your VIN and EIN. If you have a fleet and are adding a new vehicle, make sure that the new vehicle is the only vehicle that you are submitting for your new tax form.
