Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
What is a Form 2290?
The 2290 Tax Form is used to file necessary taxes with the IRS for heavy vehicles. This is for any vehicle that is 55,000lbs or more and has driven over 5,000 miles per year. It is commonly known as the HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax) and goes by many different names, including: heavy highway tax, truck tax, Highway Use Tax Return, and more. They all mean the same thing, which is the 2290 IRS schedule 1 tax form.
This form needs to be submitted annually to the IRS and paid in full before any heavy vehicle can be allowed to travel. They use this form to calculate and accept taxes for heavy vehicles. It is also used to determine the type of heavy vehicle that is on the road. This can range from standard big rigs to logging vehicles and off highway construction vehicles. It is important for the government to monitor heavy vehicles to help identify trends in industries. These taxes help pay for road improvements and offset environmental impacts.
The 2290 Tax Form is often accompanied with a 2290-V form. This form is a payment voucher that is sent in with a check or money order to help expediate payments. If you’re e-filing, we will take care of all supplementary documentation that may be required, such as the 2290-V form.

How do I get a copy of my paid 2290?

If you mailed in your forms, you would have to submit a written request either through fax or mail to your government agency and await their reply. Your request will only be granted if you have already successfully submitted your 2290 Tax Form and paid in full. You will also need to include a copy of the previously filed form that you are requesting and a signed cover sheet with your name, phone number, fax number, and the date your 2290 Tax Form was previously filed. This can take several weeks to complete.

How much is the 2290 tax?
The 2290 Heavy Vehicle Tax ranges depending on factors such as vehicle weight, time on the road, number of vehicles in the fleet, and more. It is possible for your vehicle to not owe any taxes, and it’s possible to have to pay more than $550 per vehicle. Even if you don’t owe any money, you are always required to fill out the 2290 Tax Form and submit it to your governing agency. Our job is to find out exactly how much you owe so you don’t overpay.
For most vehicles, prices begin at $100 if your heavy vehicle weighs 55,000 pounds, with an additional $22 owed for every thousand pounds over the initial 55,000 pound threshold. Depending on your category, you may be entitled to a discount. Logging vehicles, for instance, are offered a 25% discount, and suspended vehicles pay even less. It is important to know what category your vehicle falls under so you can take advantage of any discounts that you may be eligible for.
Even if your vehicle is no longer in use, you still need to file a 2290 Tax Form. However, you may be eligible for a credit to use on your vehicle that is still being used. If your heavy vehicle was stolen, destroyed, or sold, you could be entitled to a tax credit.

What if I am late to file my Form 2290?
If you’re late filing your 2290 Tax Form, there are a few things you will need to do in order to get everything back on track. The first and most important thing to note is that there will be late fees. You will be charged a 4.5% fee of the total taxes that are due and an additional 5% late processing fee. These additional fees add up if you have more than one heavy vehicle you are reporting. Unfortunately, the late fees are not just flat fees. These fees will be increased every additional month that your tax forms are not submitted, with additional interest charged. The sooner you can submit your tax documents, the better.
It’s best to avoid late fees all together by filing with an e-filer like us. If you file with us, we will make sure to contact you before your next annual taxes are due. We give you plenty of time to get everything in order and report any updates to your account. With everything already in one secure and safe location, there is no wasted time looking for past returns or documents. We help take care of everything, so you avoid late fees and save money.
Do you have to file Form 2290 every year?
Yes, the 2290 form needs to be paid and submitted every year for any vehicle that is over 55,000 lbs and drives more than 5,000 miles per year. Even if your vehicle is only used off-road or you sell heavy vehicles and don’t even drive them, you will still need to submit a 2290 Tax Form. It doesn’t matter if you owe taxes or not on the heavy vehicle, a 2290 Schedule 1 Tax Form is required every year that heavy vehicle remains in your possession.
The only time you don’t have to submit a 2290 Tax Form is after you have already submitted a 2290 Tax Form marked appropriately to inform the governing agency that this vehicle is no longer in your possession. Reasons for this may include that the heavy vehicle was stolen or destroyed.
The tax year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th. If you recently acquired your vehicle, you will need to submit your 2290 Tax Form immediately. The deadline is the last day of the next month that the heavy vehicle is first used. That means if it is used in April, you have until the last day of May to submit your 2290. After that, you will submit your forms at the same time every year.
What are the advantages of e-filing Form 2290?

What Do I need to start e-filing?
Submitting your form 2290 taxes is simple and convenient when you submit them online through us. All you need to begin is three numbers. 1) Your EIN 2) Your Vin 3) Your Taxable Gross Weight
1) You need to apply for an EIN if you do not have one already. The IRS will not accept a social security number, but as long as you have a social security number and are a citizen of the United States, you can apply for an EIN.
2) Your VIN can be found on your vehicle registration or on the vehicle itself. Make sure you have written your VIN down exactly how it appears on your registration. If you accidentally send in the wrong VIN, you will have to send in a new form 2290 with an amendment to resolve any issues.
3) Your taxable gross weight is the sum of the actual weight of the vehicle, the weight of any trailers, and the weight of the maximum load that is expected to be carried on the vehicle.
Can you transfer your Form 2290 to a new vehicle?
The short answer is “no.” You cannot transfer your 2290 Schedule 1 Tax form from one truck to another. The long answer is that you can use your old heavy vehicle as a credit to help pay the taxes on your new heavy vehicle.
Because most heavy vehicles vary in weight and description, you will need to file your second heavy vehicle with a new 2290 Tax Form. If the new vehicle is a different size and weight, you may have to pay a different amount for your new heavy vehicle than you have been paying for your old one. You can then request a pro-rated credit for any months that have already been paid in the tax year. This credit will carry over to your new vehicle to help alleviate the expense of your new heavy vehicle tax. For instance, if your old heavy vehicle was destroyed and you got an identical heavy vehicle of the same weight and category, that credit will cover the taxes for the remainder of the year.
You are required to submit a 2290 by the last day of the following month when the new vehicle is first used. It is important to start the credit approval process before that to avoid any late fees.
