Ever since the trucking company, Yellow Corp. formally announced its bankruptcy last year, there have been ongoing auctions to auction off their terminals. The competitor who has been coming out on top of most of these auctions has been Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. Just recently, they expanded even more with the absorption of ten more former Yellow Corp. terminals. It is reported that this recent purchase cost them a total of about $2.2 million. They have now won properties in Tennessee, Georgia, Idaho, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, and Washington. Knight-Swift has been on a journey of growing and expanding for quite some time. Back in March of 2023, they bought out U.S. Xpress.
Knight-Swift comes in around seventh place on most lists of largest for-hire carrier companies.
Yellow Corp. still is the technical owner of around 46 owned terminals and the name on the lease of another 108 leased terminals. With this, they still own almost 13,000 tractors and 42,000 trailers. This is what fell under their fleet by the time they declared bankruptcy in August. The company previously came in thirteenth place on most ranking lists for for-hire carrier companies.
There have been a number of court proceedings to deal with the forgoing of properties on behalf of Yellow Corp. and with the purchasing of said properties on behalf of other carriers, like Knight-Swift. Yesterday, there was a court hearing in which the lawyer representing Yellow Corp. spoke about the interest the company was seeing in their remaining properties. According to the lawyer, Allyson Smith, direct interest was expressed in 30-40 of the owned terminals with interest in at least 75 of the leased ones.
Yellow is only slowing closing deals for their properties due to the ongoing legal proceedings regarding their bankruptcy declaration.
According to a statement released by Yellow Corp. to trucking news outlet, Transport Topics, with the purchases that they have been able to close, they were able to fully repay all of their outstanding creditors. This is very significant given that they had an outstanding debt of $142.5 million, which is what led to the death of the company.
It is unknown at this time whether or not Knight-Swift intends to purchase any more auctioned off properties, or if they have obtained all that they want/need.
