What to Know About Getting a USDOT Number

If you are a commercial motor carrier, then one of the first licenses you will need will likely be a USDOT Number. This is a number assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, also known as the FMCSA. The USDOT Number is a unique number meant to identify you and your company’s safety information. It is often used on other filing’s to connect all of your permits together. Furthermore, it is necessary for inspections, audits, accident investigations, and more. Essentially, the USDOT Number is a core permit needed for truckers who meet the federal requirements.

What are the Requirements of the USDOT?

While the USDOT is generally required by all commercial transportation businesses, there are some specifics that set the boundaries of who is in fact responsible for having this permit. If you meet the following criteria, then you need to have an active USDOT Number on file with the FMCSA:

  • Your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight, combination weight, vehicle weight rating, or gross combination weight rating, 10,000 pounds or more.

  • Your vehicle is constructed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (driver included) for compensation.

  • Your vehicle is constructed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, (driver included) and not used to transport passengers for compensation.

  • Your vehicle is used to haul the types and quantities of hazardous materials requiring a safety permit in intrastate commerce.
